Incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) won the Texas Senate race, fending off a tough challenge from Rep. Beto O’Rourke, a rising Democratic star, in a campaign that captivated the political world.
Cruz held off Democratic efforts for a win in Texas, which hasn’t elected a Democrat to statewide office in more than two decades, to win a second term. His victory in the Lone Star State helps the party maintain its grip on the Senate majority.
Cruz during a victory speech on Tuesday night congratulated O’Rourke for working “tirelessly” during the heated race.
“I want to take a moment to congratulate Beto O’Rourke,” Cruz said. “He poured his heart into this campaign. He worked tirelessly. He’s a dad and he took time away from his kids.”
“I also want to say, millions across this state were inspired by his campaign,” he continued. “They didn’t prevail and I am grateful people of Texas chose a different path. But let me say to all of those who worked on his campaign, all of those who were inspired, that I am your senator as well.”
