Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, a great-great-great grandson of Mayer Anschel Rothschild who launched a banking concern in Frankfurt, died in Britain at the age of 91.

From 1976, Evelyn served as chairman of N.M. Rothschild & Sons, the dynasty’s London branch which helped finance Britain’s war against Napoleon Bonaparte. He united the London branch of the business with its French counterpart, Rothschild & Compagnie Banque, to remain competitive with younger but larger multinational banks.

The Rothschilds’ importance diminished in the 20th century when European governments relied on American banks to finance two world wars against Germany.

Evelyn de Rothschild was knighted in 1989 by Queen Elizabeth II and served as one of her financial advisers.
