Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has prepared a letter of resignation in the event that Joe Biden wins the presidency.
It is common for Cabinet members to draft letters of resignation in preparation for a transition to a new president, who will seat a Cabinet of his own, including a Defense Secretary.
Esper is also reportedly working with members of Congress in drafting legislation that would remove the names of Confederate generals from US military bases.
