Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos on Tuesday hit out at Joe Biden for his push to make public colleges free, calling it a “socialist takeover of higher education,” the Boston Globe reports.

“Make no mistake: It is a socialist takeover of higher education,” DeVos said, without mentioning Biden by name, during an online conference hosted by her department’s Federal Student Aid office. “Now, depending on your personal politics, some of you might not find that notion as scary as I do. But mark my words: None of you would like the way it will work.”

DeVos, who has been repeatedly accused of working to undermine her department’s own student loan forgiveness programs, was held in contempt of court last year by a federal judge who found that she violated a court order halting the collection of loan payments from borrowers who have applied for forgiveness.

In her speech on Tuesday, the secretary addressed the Education Department’s recent activities and the “insidious notion of government gift giving.” She did not touch on relief for student loan borrowers due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic despite the moratorium on payments ending at the end of this month.

  1. Disagree.
In NYC going back a few decades, the City College system was free to all qualified students who were NYC residents; they did have to pay a small registration fee and for their books. As long as the City maintained standards it was considered an excellent college system with City college in Manhattan considered a top school and Brooklyn College law school and night school among the best in the country. Many famous people graduated from the City College system. No one considered it Socialist.
Of course this was before the government decided, in the name of diversity, to dumb down standards so that unqualified students could also enter. Now it’s no longer considered to be a great school.

    • You have answered the issue and raised the best of the best qualifying points – “qualified students”. Free education (although it’s not really free) exists as free babysitting services from pre-k through 12th grade in the public system. When Ed “How I’m doing” Koch imposed tuition to close his fiscal irresponsibility, the systems feeding City U didn’t get better and the City U system had to re-design its standards so City U could survive. It wasn’t diversity that killed the beast, it was $$$.
