Another lawsuit centers around Blum’s life insurance, which Senator Feinstein claims she needs to cover her escalating medical expenses. These legal battles have added to the speculation about her fitness to serve in Congress.
Despite announcing that she will not seek re-election in 2024, Feinstein’s colleagues have expressed concerns about her declining mental acuity. During a recent Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, she required prompting from a colleague to cast her vote on a significant bill.
Feinstein’s health issues came to light when she was hospitalized in February due to shingles complications. Although she recovered at her San Francisco residence for two months, upon her return to Washington in May, she seemed disoriented and confused about her extended absence, insisting she had been present and voting during that time.

There were three situations like this in the 20th century. Carter Glass was so frail that he couldn’t even leave his apartment the last four years of his life. He refused to resign from the Senate or even give up his chairmanship of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He died in office.
Theodore Francis Green was Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during the 1950s and was obviously suffering from dementia. Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson forced him to resign from the committee chairmanship but he served out his Senate term. At the time of his retirement he was the oldest person ever to serve in the Senate.
Karl Mundt suffered a severely disabling stroke and could no longer attend Senate sessions. Over two years later the Republican Caucus stripped him of his committee assignments. He did not resign but served out the remainder of his term.
