DIGGING DEEPER: Hidden In The Fine Print –  More on the New NY State Yeshiva Regulations

When SED released its regulations on Thursday, they provided only a broad outline of the new regulations. SED made it sound like Yeshivas would only be required to teach Math, Science, Arithmetic and Social Studies.
Now that the full text of the regulations is available – look at what Matzav.com found in the fine print. It’s almost hard to believe.
“Instruction in health education pursuant to Education Law 804” – this includes: “health education courses which include instruction regarding alcohol, tobacco and other drugs as the Commissioner may deem necessary and desirable  . . . The Commissioner is authorized to make recommendations . . . every three years .. . to include … information available regarding the misuse and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, including but not limited to heroin.”
Heroin Instruction?! In our boys & girls Elementary Schools?!
“Instruction in physical education and kindred subjects pursuant to Education Law 803(4)”  — this includes “courses shall be designed to aid in the . . . development of character, citizenship, physical fitness, health and worthy use of leisure time” in a manner that will be reviewed by the local school board!
Our Yeshiva boys will be taught how to use leisure time in a manner equivalent to Public School instruction!  Heaven Forbid!
Instruction in the history, meaning and significance of the provisions of the US & NYS constitutions is accompanied with a reference to Education Law 801, which requires “instruction in patriotism, citizenship and human rights issues”, referencing such incidents as the mass starvation in Ireland from 1845-1850.
We have good reason to fear “human rights issues” as taught by New York progressives.  And – do we want our Yeshivas to mimic the city’s sterling job of teaching patriotism to NYC children?
This makes clear what we always feared about State control of yeshiva curriculum – the requirements in these regulations are the starting point of state control, not the end,

  1. Stop voting for Democrats! Stop voting for Democrats! They will do whatever they can to take away your freedom of religion. They will take away your freedoms.

Stop voting Democrat. The modern-day Democrat is leftist, socialist leftist Democrats. That’s exactly what they are. Don’t fool yourselves.

    • NYC is 8-1 in favor of registered democrats. Even if every single Frum Yid votes for a Republican candidate, that would person would lose in a landslide. NYC is a democrat stronghold. There is NOTHING you can do about it. Stop blaming Frum voters for the democrat politicians we have here in this City and State. This is the metzius.

  2. Let’s play Devil’s advocate and relate to the comments. Heroin instruction, as if there are no known drug addicts, tobacco addicts and alcohol addicts in our community. Thursday is Purim, no drunks in Brooklyn, fer sure.
Yeshiva boys will learn to use their leisure time, what leisure time are you referring to exactly. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. they’re in Yeshiva. Lunch is an hour, if combined with recess (heavens to Betsy, oh my)
Patriotism taught in schools, not since the middle of the 70’s. There is no Pledge of Allegiance recited each morning, no assemblies, and pants hang below the visible spectrum of decency, even for the non-Jews. The last civics course taught in NYC public schools resembled a Jimmy Carter rally – DEAD, DOPEY, DUMB.

  3. Instruction in health education pursuant to Education Law 804
Perhaps our students should get education against abuse of alcohol and tobacco. Those certainly are sicknesses that plague our community, especially tobacco.

Instruction in physical education and kindred subjects pursuant to Education Law 803(4)
Why shouldn’t our students learn about the benefits of physical fitness, health and worthy use of leisure time? These are all important subjects.

Instruction in the history, meaning and significance of the provisions of the US & NYS constitutions
And are our students educated about patriotism, citizenship, and human rights?

I wonder if our schools would tailor courses in all the above matters in a responsible and educational manner, and we’d put our Orthodox lawyers to work on getting our prospectus approved by the correct office, if it might be acceptable to the government.
