Israeli authorities have stepped up enforcement at the country’s exit points, stopping dozens of Chareidi men — including Breslover Chassidim traveling to Uman for Rosh Hashanah — from leaving Israel because of outstanding military draft orders.
The Israel Airports Authority said Wednesday that security personnel at Ben Gurion Airport stopped six Chareidi men who were listed as being obligated to report for military service and were attempting to leave the country.
The six were intercepted in separate parts of the airport. Two were stopped at Terminal 1, while another four were prevented from departing through Terminal 3.
Following their detention, the six were turned over to officials from the Population and Immigration Authority. Checks conducted by authorities determined that all six were subject to active military orders barring them from leaving Eretz Yisroel.
The enforcement comes as growing numbers of Breslover Chassidim are making their annual journey to Uman, Ukraine, to spend Rosh Hashanah at the tziyun of Rav Nachman of Breslov.
Dozens of Breslover Chassidim have been stopped at Ben Gurion Airport after authorities discovered that they were subject to exit orders stemming from their failure to report to IDF draft offices.
Attempts to reach Uman through alternative routes have also encountered difficulties. An additional group of Breslover Chassidim was stopped at the Taba border crossing while attempting to enter Egypt, from where they reportedly planned to fly to European destinations before continuing onward to Uman for Rosh Hashanah.
