COVID-19 cases among vaccinated seniors soared in 2021, according to newly disclosed data that was acquired by U.S. health agencies but not presented to the public, the Epoch Times reports. Humetrix Cloud Services was contracted by the U.S. military to analyze vaccine data. The company performed a fresh analysis as authorities considered in 2021 whether COVID-19 vaccine boosters were necessary amid studies finding waning vaccine effectiveness.
The findings indicated that the percentage of COVID-19 cases among seniors increasingly consisted of vaccinated individuals. For the week ending July 31, 2021, post-vaccination COVID-19 cases accounted for 73 percent of cases among individuals aged 65 and older, despite 80 percent of the elderly population being fully vaccinated at the time.
The research also revealed that breakthrough infection rates were higher among those who had received vaccinations earlier. Rates were approximately twice as high among individuals vaccinated five to six months prior compared to those vaccinated three to four months before. These breakthrough cases were initially observed in January 2021.
Furthermore, the data indicated a decline in protection against hospitalization. By the week ending July 31, 2021, 63 percent of COVID-19 hospitalizations among seniors were among those who were fully vaccinated. This pattern of reduced protection was consistent among individuals vaccinated earlier.
The vaccine effectiveness (VE) against infection was estimated at only 33 percent, while effectiveness against hospitalization had dropped to 57 percent.
The study encompassed 20 million Medicare beneficiaries, including 5.6 million seniors who had received the primary series of a COVID-19 vaccine. Notably, the study identified that seniors who had previously contracted and recovered from COVID-19 were more likely to avoid hospitalization. Risk factors for hospitalization included underlying conditions like obesity and being in the oldest age group, over 85.
Humetrix shared this data with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in August 2021. However, the data was not publicly disclosed by the CDC or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as they deliberated on COVID-19 vaccine boosters.
Del Bigtree, founder of the Informed Consent Action Network, a nonprofit promoting transparency in medical matters, highlighted the importance of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in bringing this information to light. He expressed concerns about the failure to assess and share this valuable real-world data.
Dr. Francis Collins, the former director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, acknowledged in an email obtained through FOIA that the study’s results provided compelling evidence of waning vaccine effectiveness, especially among those over 65.
The CDC and FDA did not present this data to the public when considering COVID-19 vaccine booster recommendations, despite actively promoting the vaccines throughout the pandemic.
Ultimately, the FDA authorized Pfizer booster shots for many Americans, followed by the CDC’s recommendations for most individuals. Both agencies later expanded booster recommendations to include almost all Americans aged 5 and older due to concerns about the durability of the initial shots.
