FDA Announces New Labeling Guidelines For Longer Acting Painkillers

pillsIn response to increasing numbers of deaths, injuries, and addiction stemming from prescription painkiller abuse, the FDA has issued new labeling guidelines for medical providers who prescribe longer acting painkillers, commonly referred to as opoids.

The goal, according to the FDA, is to encourage the safer use of opoids by more responsible and educated prescribing by medical providers. In making these labeling changes, manufacturers of the drugs will also be required to conduct studies regarding the long term effects of the drugs, since data has been lacking regarding the efficacy of such medications to treat chronic non-cancer related pain (CNCP).
