Israel has developed a network of large pumps capable of inundating the extensive system of tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip, primarily used by Hamas, with seawater, as per a Wall Street Journal’s report citing information from US officials.
According to the report, this strategic move could potentially annihilate the tunnels, compelling the terrorists to abandon their subterranean hideouts. However, it comes with the unintended consequence of jeopardizing Gaza’s water supply.
The Israeli Defense Forces completed the installation of these substantial seawater pumps approximately one mile north of the Al-Shati refugee camp around the middle of the preceding month, according to the officials.
Each of at least five pumps has the capacity to extract water from the Mediterranean Sea, channeling thousands of cubic meters per hour into the tunnels. The aim is to flood the tunnels systematically within a matter of weeks.
This plan was reportedly presented by Israel to the United States last month, though US officials suggest that Israel has yet to make a final decision on whether to proceed with this tactic. The possibility of implementing this plan has not been ruled out either.
The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit stated this week that since the commencement of ground operations in the Gaza Strip, IDF soldiers have identified more than 800 shafts connected to Hamas’ subterranean tunnel network.
The flooding approach is not entirely unprecedented, as Egypt has employed a similar strategy in the past by flooding Hamas terror tunnels situated beneath the Egypt-Gaza Rafah border crossing.
