Wizz Air, the Hungarian budget airline, has declared its intention to levy an additional charge on flights departing from Ben Gurion Airport in Israel.

As stated on the company’s official website, “bookings made after February 16, 2024, for flights originating from Tel Aviv airport will incur an extra airport fee due to the mandatory shift of its flight operations to Terminal 3 at Ben Gurion Airport. This relocation has led to elevated operational expenses compared to those at Terminal 1.”

The supplementary fee will vary from 12 to 20 shekels ($3.5-$5.5) per ticket, contingent upon the ticket’s price.

In line with the global trend among airlines, Wizz Air suspended all flights to Ben Gurion Airport following the commencement of the conflict and is set to recommence its services in the country next month, just before the Passover holidays, bringing some positive news for Israeli travelers. The airline plans to operate three weekly flights to a selection of destinations including London, Rome, Krakow, Budapest, Bucharest, and Sofia.

Terminal 1 garnered attention recently when Ryanair, the Irish low-cost carrier, abruptly announced the cancellation of its flights to Israel, citing the ongoing closure of the terminal earmarked for budget airlines.

In response, the Israel Airports Authority stated, “The airline was informed that Terminal 1 was non-operational at the time it declared its intention to resume services in Israel. Since the onset of the conflict, and owing to a significant reduction in activity at Ben Gurion Airport along with security considerations, Terminal 1 had been shut down. All international and domestic flights to Eilat had been redirected to Terminal 3.” The statement further clarified, “Given the current passenger traffic, operating two terminals lacks economic viability. Terminal 1 will recommence operations as passenger numbers rise. Flights departing from Terminal 3 will be subject to the corresponding airport charges. All airlines, including Ryanair, were apprised of this prior to resuming operations.”
