The House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Global Health held a hearing on Capitol Hill, led by Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), condemning the troubling promotion of antisemitism by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The hearing featured numerous distinguished House representatives who decried the UN’s long-standing bias against Israel and called for a shift in the international community’s perspective.

Congressman Smith, a vocal advocate for human rights, delivered a powerful message at the hearing, emphasizing the urgent need for the United States and the international community to hold the UN accountable for its actions. He highlighted the UN’s role in perpetuating hatred against Jews among Palestinian youth and stressed the need to demand an end to these biased practices. Smith also pointed out the recent genocidal atrocities committed by Hamas as a direct outcome of the antisemitism fomented and enabled by the United Nations.

The witnesses who testified at the hearing brought to light the alarming promotion of antisemitic hate within UNRWA. Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of UN Watch, called for the dismissal of Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Palestine, due to her concerning statements about Israel’s right to self-defense. Other witnesses, including the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the UN’s bias against Israel, undermining the organization’s original purpose to promote global peace and security.

The impact of UNRWA’s bias against Israel was a key focus of the hearing. Congressman Smith drew attention to reports by UN Watch and IMPACT-SE that documented the deliberate hiring of teachers by UNRWA who praise Hitler and spread antisemitic conspiracy theories. Smith described UNRWA schools as breeding grounds for hatred and referred to the organization’s promotion of hatred of Jews among Palestinian youth through its textbooks, curricula, summer camps, and official media.

Representative Kathy Manning (D-NC) pointed out how the UN’s anti-Israel bias undermines prospects for peace in the region and unfairly isolates the Jewish state. Other representatives echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for fairness and justice in international forums. Representative Brad Schneider (D-IL) drew attention to the UN’s failure to take action on critical issues, such as the plight of 240 hostages in Gaza, further highlighting the organization’s shortcomings.

The hearing also shed light on the United States’ financial contribution to UNRWA under the Biden administration. Despite the previous administration’s decision to halt funding due to concerns about prevalent antisemitism within UNRWA institutions, the Biden administration reinstated the contribution. Congressman Smith expressed concerns about the allocation of $1 billion to UNRWA, emphasizing the need to address the promotion of antisemitism within the organization.

The hearing brought to the forefront the need for the international community to address the bias against Israel perpetuated by the United Nations. The concerns raised by Congressman Smith and other representatives underscore the urgent need to hold the UN accountable for its actions and demand an end to the promotion of antisemitism among Palestinian youth through UNRWA. The testimonies of witnesses and the statements of the representatives reflect a call for fairness, justice, and a shift in perspective within international forums.

  1. It is way past time for the U.S to leave this body. It is just a drain on our resources and does not reflect our values. Without U.S support it will wither away and die as it should
