The Polish city of Sanz (Nowy Sacz) unveiled a monument to commemorate 12,000 local Jews slaughtered in the Holocaust.

The project was initiated by Darius Popiela, 37, founder of the “People, Not Numbers” organization, which aspires not only to raise funds for Holocaust monuments but also to document the names of the individual victims.

At the eve of World War II, the famous center of the Sanz dynasty had a population of 10,000 Jews, constituting a third of the city’s population. Around 20,000 Jews living in the Nazi-established Nowy Sącz Ghetto were deported to the Belzec extermination camp in August 1942 and murdered.
