The IDF said yesterday it would launch another round of searches for Sgt. Guy Chever, who mysteriously went missing almost 20 years ago, 124 News reports.

On Aug. 17, 1997, the 20-year-old left his post in the Golan Heights, wearing his uniform and armed with an assault rifle, and hasn’t been seen or heard from since. The army will conduct “focused searches” in the area through Wednesday. There was no immediate indication that the effort is based on any new evidence.

A number of theories have emerged over the years, including that he had been kidnapped and taken to Syria, gone AWOL in the face of a minor disciplinary hearing, or fled the country.

After his disappearance, a woman living in the Golan Heights describe seeing someone matching Chever’s description walking towards the Syrian border.  Eleven years ago, in 2005, a German national who had been living in Israel was arrested in Syria.  After her release she said that she had been interrogated by a man speaking Hebrew, and two years later identified her interrogator as Chever from a photo.
