Goliath, say hello to David’s Sling.

Bechasdei Hashem, Israel successfully thwarted 99% of the 300 lethal suicide drones and missiles launched by Iran against the nation last night using the sophisticated air defense system dubbed David’s Sling, alongside various other anti-missile capabilities. The assistance extended by the US, the UK, and an unexpected Arab partner contributed to this defense.

Notably, Israeli media reported that not a single drone or cruise missile launched by Iran and its proxies managed to penetrate Israel’s defenses. Only a handful of Iran’s more sophisticated ballistic missiles found their mark in Israel. Despite this direct assault from Iran, Israel incurred minimal damage, with only one known casualty, a 7-year-old Bedouin girl.

Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. (R) Peter Lerner, in a statement to CNN, provided a tentative count of the ordnance launched: “So the numbers are still are not 100% clear, but I understand 120 ballistic missiles, around 30 cruise missiles were flied, around 170 explosive drones — explosive UAVs that will route.”

Hezbollah in Lebanon also fired around 40 rockets into Israel during the same timeframe. The similarity of munitions employed by Iran in this attack to those supplied to the Houthis and utilized in Ukraine was noted.

While the “Iron Dome” system is renowned for its efficacy in intercepting rockets from Hezbollah and Hamas, countering the extensive barrage from Iran necessitated the use of more advanced anti-missile systems. The interception efforts were primarily carried out by fighter aircraft equipped with air-to-air missiles, David’s Sling, designed to track and eliminate drones and medium-range missiles, and the Arrow 2 or Arrow 3 missiles, engineered to neutralize ballistic missiles in space, as per the Jerusalem Post.

Video footage released by the IDF showcased missiles ablaze in flight before being neutralized. Israel commenced interception operations around midnight as cruise missiles were launched from Iraq towards its territory, while the US reportedly intercepted drones over Iraq and Syria.

The IDF also shared images of an F-35I stealth fighter returning to base after being scrambled to safeguard Israeli airspace. This fifth-generation fighter jet, designed in the US, boasts the capability to engage drones and missiles from considerable distances, surpassing the visual range of the pilot.

In addition to the US, other allies played a crucial role in the successful interception of explosive drones and missiles aimed at Israel. President Biden reiterated America’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security, emphasizing the effectiveness of the interception efforts.

According to National Security spokesman John Kirby, the US intercepted “several dozen” missiles and drones. Currently, the US has Patriot missile batteries shielding American troops in northern Iraq and the USS Eisenhower aircraft carrier group stationed in the Red Sea, both potentially capable of engaging Iranian threats.

Reports from The Wall Street Journal indicated the deployment of two additional destroyers by the US, specialized in intercepting incoming missiles and aircraft, to the region. Two destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean reportedly intercepted three Iranian ballistic missiles heading towards Israel.

US warplanes also engaged incoming targets, while the UK and France confirmed the involvement of their military assets in the Middle East in neutralizing some of Iran’s assault. Further assistance came from Jordan, a former adversary of Israel, now aligned with the US.

Jordanian military officials confirmed the use of US-made F-16 fighter jets to intercept Iranian drones, denying any involvement in aiding Israel but asserting the protection of their airspace and citizens.

Following the attack, President Biden reassured Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu of the US’s steadfast commitment to Israel’s security, commending Israel’s ability to withstand unprecedented assaults and sending a clear message to its adversaries.

Moreover, Biden assured Netanyahu that the US would refrain from participating in offensive actions against Iran, as reported by CNN. He encouraged Israel to view the successful interception of the Iranian attack as a victory.

Subsequently, Hezbollah launched an additional 30 rockets from Lebanon towards northern Israel on Sunday morning, attributing the strikes to Israeli actions in southern Lebanon earlier that night. One rocket struck Katzrin, causing property damage but no injuries. This attack followed accusations from the Islamic Republic against Israel for the killing of a top Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who was a key coordinator with Hezbollah, on April 1.
