Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was not informed of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s trip to Tehran last week, thus driving his decision to submit his resignation to President Hassan Rouhani, a spokesman for the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Confirming speculation that Assad’s visit had led Zarif to submit his resignation– which was ultimately rejected by Rouhani– the spokesperson said the ministry of foreign affairs did not have any information about Assad’s trip and “this lack of information was maintained until the end of the trip.”

Assad met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei last week in Tehran, marking his first visit to the Islamic Republic since the start of the Syrian war.
