Israel has reportedly sent aid to Indonesia following a devastating earthquake and tsunami disaster that has killed over 1,400 people, despite the two countries having no official diplomatic ties.

Israel’s public broadcaster Kan reported Wednesday that Israel sent water purifiers to disaster-hit areas in Indonesia under the auspices of the Red Cross, and that a delegation of aid workers was preparing to travel to the Muslim island nation in the coming days.

The report was not confirmed by the Israeli Foreign Ministry nor the Prime Minister’s Office, and both declined requests for comment, however, Deputy Minister for Diplomacy Michael Oren tweeted that sending disaster assistance to the world’s largest Muslim country, and one with which Israel has no diplomatic ties, showed “compassion and humanity and our willingness to share our expertise for its betterment.”
