The Israeli military discovered a USB key containing instructions for creating a “cyanide dispersion device” on the body of a Hamas terrorist involved in the October 7 terrorist attack. This information comes from two Israeli officials and a copy of a classified cable from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, obtained by Axios.

It remains uncertain whether Hamas had a concrete plan or attempted to manufacture makeshift chemical weapons. The Israeli Foreign Ministry’s weapons of mass destruction non-proliferation department transmitted a classified cable to Israeli embassies worldwide, including Washington. The cable was titled “Hamas intention of using chemical weapons.”

While the authenticity of the Hamas file hasn’t been independently confirmed by Axios, Israeli officials have indicated they would only share information with allies if it was deemed authentic and reliable. The Israeli Foreign Ministry chose not to comment on the matter.

Israeli intelligence determined that the document’s origin traced back to a 2003 Al-Qaeda manual. The cable from the Israeli Foreign Ministry suggests that this discovery indicates Hamas’s intent to employ chemical weapons as part of its terrorist activities against civilians.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry provided its embassies with the original file, along with an English description. Diplomats were instructed not to publicly disclose the information but to privately share it with their host governments. The ministry directed its diplomats to inform their counterparts that Hamas aims to carry out attacks in a manner similar to the strategies attempted by ISIS.

Since October 7, Israel has shared both publicly and privately obtained documents from deceased Hamas attackers. Some of these documents, labeled as “Top Secret” by Hamas, purportedly contained operational plans for targeting Israeli villages and military bases near the border. These plans included explicit directives to maximize casualties and take hostages back to Gaza.
