Israel’s rapidly growing ultra-Orthodox community is expected to double within 16 years, less than half the time it will take for the rest of the population to increase by the same proportion, the Israel Democracy Institute said in a report released Thursday.
In its fifth annual statistical assessment of ultra-Orthodox society, the IDI examined developments in such areas as standard of living, education, employment, social mobility, leisure, and lifestyle.
Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, government ministries and agencies, and the National Insurance Institute, it found ultra-Orthodox households on average earn less than half of the income of other Jewish households, while identifying trends showing more community members entering higher education and shifting toward higher paying jobs.
The study found that the ultra-Orthodox, or Charedi, population in Israel numbers around 1.175 million, showing an annual growth rate of 4.2 percent over the past decade, over twice the 1.9% shown by the rest of the Israeli population and over three times that of the rest of the Israeli Jewish population (excluding the Charedi population), 1.2%.

I CAN’T UNDERSTAND HOW A CHAREDI SITE STILL USES THE OFFENSIVE TERM ‘ULTRA-ORTHODOX”.
Why is ultra orthodox offensive? If your an extremist for a good cause, if your following the Torah on a higher level than what’s called for but doing it in the proper way, what’s offensive about that. It’s an honor to be called that
theres no such thing as ultra – orthodox
I prefer the term ortho-max… I kill weeds AND keep Torah 🙂
Kayn Yirbu with Brocho and Hatzlacha!!
To put this rate of increase into perspective, Klal Yisroel in Mtzrayim was increasing at this same rate.
Assuming the number 70 (almost all the 70 where men) when we came down to Mitzrayim and 600,000 when we left that is a doubling every 16 years. 70 X 2 ^13 = 573,444 210/ 13 = 16.15
