In the event of a coronavirus outbreak in the United States, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Ocean and Burlington counties was designated Thursday as an emergency camp to quarantine potential patients.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper was asked by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to select forts and bases near 11 major airports that could house airline or cruise ship passengers, should existing designated sites become filled, according to the Pentagon.

The Joint Base was designated because of its proximity to Newark Liberty International Airport. The base is about 60 miles south of what is one of the busiest international airports in the United States. The Air Force-led military facility is also less than 50 miles from Philadelphia International Airport.
