In response to Israeli Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s remarks against yeshivos and kollelim, MK Matan Kahana said in the Knesset plenum: “The people of Israel exist thanks to them. I hope there will be many more who will sit and study Torah seriously.”

Kahana, who is serving as deputy minister, responded as part of the discussion on the weekly no-confidence motion raised by the opposition. Kahana went to the plenary podium and criticized Lieberman’s remarks made at the opening of the Yisrael Beiteinu faction, in which he bluntly attacked Torah scholars and argued that they should not be funded. “They eat a sandwich, drink coffee, talk politics and then open some books,” Lieberman had said.

Lieberman had said on the cuts in the yeshiva budget: “It is impossible to act both against the coalition and to receive money from the coalition. These are not sacred studies. These are idle studies.”

In response, Kahana said that “in my opinion, those who study Torah seriously, they are the people who Israel exists by virtue of them.”

He said that “anyone who can study Torah should study Torah and do nothing else, because the people of Israel survive on it. I hope there will be many more who will sit and study Torah seriously,” concluded the MK.

  1. Matan Kahana, who was behind the chasing of religious Jews out of Meron this year to say that???? What consequences did he suffer after that he suddenly talking like that?

  2. However you look at Lieberman, he wants to dust Torah down. Thankfully this half breed is not in our kollels.

    Great.

  3. Are you kidding? The one who wants to be מקעקע ביצת ישראל is praising Torah study? The world is your weird….

  4. Kahane needs to sit with utj in the next government so he is trying to keep all his options open by responding a bit to Lieberman

  5. There are three reasons not frum people like Lieberman or non jews in the State Education dept of NY will never understand the importance of kollel or the yeshiva curriculum in general. One- although in yeshiva there are tests and a man learning in Kollel has the same responsibility to the kollel like any employee there is one major difference. When some is studying for any profession a doctor, lawyer, plumber etc there is an end goal in sight – the license, degree, certification. When learning Torah there may be a test for accountability but there is really no end goal. We learn Torah for the sake of learning Torah. Two – I once heard from a famous Rav the difference between Torah learning and studying for a profession. When studying for a profession you read the text once twice, three times only to pass the test. If there were a pill you can take to learn the information in a moment you would, Then, there are many parts of the curriculum that are rarely ever needed, and it won’t be studied again. In Torah we learn even things that are seemingly not relevant. Third – Go to any bais medrish and yeshiva and you will something very interesting the first grader and kollel man are using the same chumash text. Gemara text too is the same for the beginner in fourth / fifth grade and the kollel man. In secular world every grade has their own text usually age appropriate. I say this is something only Hashem can do. A secular person looks at this phenomenon as very strange.

  6. There are many non kosher animals the Torah Hkdosha mentions the chazir specifically as it displays outward signs of being kosher. Kahana is sonah dat and is pandering for political purposes. Stay away…lo muktzech v’lo mduvshech.
