This Rosh Chodesh morning, MK Gilad Kariv, a Reform Jew, caused a stir when he entered the women’s section of the Kosel to give a Sefer Torah to the radical, anti-Orthodox, fringe Women of the Wall group.

In response, MK Meir Porush of Yahadut Hatorah Later walked into the Knesset’s Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee, which is headed by Kariv, and promptly began saying Tehillim loudly.

Porush was protesting what Kariv had done with the Sefer Torah, which was actually against the instructions of the Justice Ministry. A Western Wall Heritage Foundation staff member had explicitly asked Kariv not to provoke others by doing this, but Kariv ignored the pleas and said that he would do what he wants “according to his religious beliefs.”

After he gave the Sefer Torah to the small group of around twenty radical women, a tumult broke out.

Porush carried on with his Tehillim recital – first while standing, then while sitting – at Kariv’s meeting until Porush was literally pulled from the room.

“I will not stop until you stop going to the Kosel,” Porush told Kariv. “If you stop going into the ezras noshim at the Kosel, then I will stop coming here.”
