Lakewood had also hired its first Orthodox Jewish cop, among a group of 13 new cops.

Police officer Michael Wolf, in uniform, was sworn in as the first Orthodox policeman to join the Lakewood Police Department. With his arrival, township police expect to have closer communication with the local Orthodox Jewish community.

The promotion ceremony was an opportunity for the officials to discus their own initiatives for calming fears and improving safety in a community were Orthodox Jews make up a highly visible and ever-growing segment of the population.

“Lakewood remains a safe place thanks to the job these men and women do every day and night,” Meyer said.

  1. Only one frum cop in a majority frum city?! Our people are criminally dumb in outsourcing our security. No paid employee will risk his life to defend ours, unless he is one of ours – in which case there may be a chance that he’ll be there when we actually need him.

    • I don’t claim to know with certainty but I do not think you are right. There are numerous retired police officers and security personnel who know exactly what their job entails and have previously demonstrated their selflessness in performing their work. Many continuously show true care for the children in their charge and really deserve appreciation and recognition!

      • Dear Zlata, please look up Scot Peterson from Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018 and Crown Heights riots in 1991. Cops hid away and did nothing when things hit the fan. That is the reason not to outsource your security.

  2. Dear 10:59, contrary to your beliefs no doubt based on excessive movie watching, being a cop in Lakewood NJ is one of the safest jobs you can have. So I wouldn’t mind if my son took this cushy government job and retired after 20 years with full pension. In fact, even I myself would go for it if they didn’t have age limits. My point stands: our people are fools for outsourcing our security.

    • What if the job requires to do something towards fellow Jews i.e. violate halacha? Of course one can resign, but this is something to be expected beforehand.

  3. Just what the doctor ordered. This is what they need in Lakewood ?

If an Orthodox Jew wants to be in law enforcement he should do so in a different town. In fact many fine officers in police departments across the country purposely serve communities in which they don’t live. They don’t want to find themselves in the uncomfortable situation in which they must cite their own friends and neighbors.
