Jack Ciattarelli spent all of one Thursday last month campaigning in one town: Lakewood, NJ. And apparently it paid off.

Only time will tell whether the Republican will become the governor of the Garden State, but in Lakewood, he’s king.

Ciattarelli garnered 61% of the vote in Lakewood, for a total of 11,644 votes, despite the local Vaad and askanim backing the incumbent Democrat, Governor Phil Murphy, who received 7,112 votes.

During his visit to Lakewood, Ciattarelli stopped at Beth Medrash Govoha, the famed yeshiva, and met with yungeleit and bochurim there. He also made numerous other stops in the town.

Ciattarelli has reportedly pledged to address the injustice surrounding the venerated founder of SCHI, Rabbi Osher Eisemann. This is a matter that is close to the hearts of many Lakewood residents and may have been the deciding factor in Lakewooders coming out in support of the former assemblyman from Somerset County in Tuesday’s election.

As for another matter that matters to Lakewood residents, Ciattarelli has said that his “first priority is improving Route 9 from Lakewood to Toms River. That’s the No. 1 project in my transportation plan.”

  1. It’s good the people know better! And here I thought the “vaad” was already rendered useless when they told everyone to vote for Governor Christie’s opponent. Back then Lakewood went very heavily for Christie as well.

  2. Voting is supposed to be an individuals choice and private. Where does it say that we must follow whatever the askanim say in total lockstep? Are we allowed to think on our own and vote for kvod shomayim?! Enough is enough. This is very encouraging news for our democracy.

  3. whoever voted in Lakewood for jack ciattarelli making a big chilluel Hashem. Phil murphy has been friends with jews even before coming into office and still friends with the jews.so whoever voted murphy did the right thing

  4. The Rabbonim said to vote Democratic, it’s asur to vote Republican. Just bc American government gives us a choice, that doesn’t mean the Torah does.

    • asur? dream on its not a halachic issue they can recommend a candidate but nobody is forced halachicly to cast such a vote for so and so . it’s outside their halachic jurisdiction. revisionism is despicable. and for the record I actually think voting for Jack was a shortsighted view.

  5. The askanim need to start considering the needs of the community as a whole rather than their own interests. Or they will become irrelevant if they have any relevance left.

  6. Lakewood didn’t vote Jack. Only a third of registered voters actually cast ballots.
After all the hot talk against Murphy’s mandates and the economy, or the Vaad’s endorsement and hakaras hatov for the incumbent, only a pathetic fraction made the effort to vote.
Imagine a chasuna with only a third of RSVP’s actually attending! What an embarrassment!
It seems that most people either didn’t care, at all, or preferred to “vote” through posting their opinions, and debating in cofee rooms, shul parking lots, or after the morning dip.

After making very sure that the politicians will know that Lakewood numbers are only on paper, and that their votes count for preciously little, everyone could now sit down with friends and family, debating what could have been, would have been, or should have been….

    • Ladies should not vote because it’s not tznius for them to be standing in line with a man right behind them. There is also general taaruvos in the place where you vote. A bas yisroel should not be seen in such a makom.

  7. I agree its really embarrassing that only a third of Lakewood showed up to vote. If we dodnt vote we loose any political power to counter anti smites like AOC .
