Professor Aaron Twerski penned a letter to the New York State Education Department, instructing it not to meddle in the education of yeshivos.

Professor Twerski, of Brooklyn,  is the Irwin and Jill Cohen Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School, as well as a former Dean and professor of tort law at Hofstra University School of Law.

He is a scion of the Chernobyl, Chabad, Sanz, and Bobov Chassidic dynasties. He and his twin brother, Rav Michel Twerski, are the youngest sons of Rav Yaakvo Yisroel Twerski and Rebbetzin Devorah Leah Twerski. He is the younger brother of the late Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski.

In his letter, he states, “In total I have been a professor of law for over fifty years. I am the father, grandfather, and great-grandfather of over 100 descendants all who attended yeshivos. I came to Borough Park for the express purpose of providing my nine children education in Chassidic schools.”

Says Professor Twerski, “My opposition to your rules is vociferous. The responsibility for education of their children is the prerogative of the parent, not the state. The Chassidic lifestyle rejects much of the current culture. Our views on morality are often diametrically opposed to what has now become standard in society. We have done a magnificent job in educating our children. They are deeply religious, highly disciplined, hard-working and industrious.”

  1. This is a beautiful letter which should be sent all over the US, Canada, UK and wherever there are yeshivos. INCLUDING ISRAEL. Harav Professor Twerski should be appointed GLOBAL EDUCATION MINISTER.

  2. In New York, it is legal to for a pregnant woman to obtain an abortion.

Everyone agrees that an abortion successfully ends the life potential of a fetus or baby. The State of New York believes it has no interest to ensure that a baby or fetus grows into a child. The State of New York has no problem with the fact that an aborted fetus or a post-birth aborted baby will never receive a post eighth grade (Amish teenagers legally end their secular education at grade 8), or that the aborted fetus’ school curriculum will not be “substantially equivalent” to the course of study in public schools.

    Do you see the problem?

The state believes it has no interest in whether a fetus continues to childhood. However, if it does survive the birth process, it must have a school curriculum which is “substantially equivalent” to that of the public schools system.

In New York, murder is just fine but state-defined ignorance is illegal.

If the State of New York would be sincerely concerned about the “substantial equivalence of school programs,” it would arrest the hundreds of thousands of public school parents whose school-age children are regularly truant. Truant public school students are not better educated than some Yeshiva students who are not taught the subjects the state wants to require.

    No regulations please.

  3. Additional support for HaRav Professor Twerski:
Yeshiva and Bais Yaakov high school students have consistently scored higher than others on the Regents exams in all subjects: math, sciences, etc.

  4. sorry to say Professor Twerski is 1000% CORRECT. I attended Bobover Yeshiva High School, took NYState Regents in Algebra and Geometry as required, got a 98 & 97 respectively. I graduated High School thru a correspondence course ‘because I wanted to do it in one year. I am now RETIRED but worked on Wall Street as Director of “major” firms, all with a YESHIVA education and I wasn’t alone in this field. There were and are many more like me.
