The Chairman of Israel’s Finance Committee, MK Moshe Gafni of United Torah Judaism, addressed the enlistment of charedi yeshiva students during a discussion on Thursday.

At the cornerstone-laying ceremony for a new charedi school, Gafni emphasized, “The presence of Torah scholars is indispensable for our existence in this land.”

He highlighted the historical context, noting, “After two millennia of dispersion, the Jewish people have reclaimed their status as a nation in their ancestral homeland, largely due to the dedication of Torah scholars who uphold our heritage.”

Expressing appreciation for the sacrifices of soldiers, Gafni added, “I commend the brave soldiers who defend our borders, whether in Gaza or the north. Our collective prayer is for their safe return. Yet, the future of our nation hinges equally on the preservation of Torah scholarship, which must be safeguarded at all costs.”

This evening, Israel’s Supreme Court issued an interim injunction halting the allocation of funds earmarked for charedi individuals eligible for IDF conscription.

Earlier in the day, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara submitted a response to the Supreme Court concerning the Draft Law, distinct from the government’s submission. She advocated for the commencement of charedi conscription from April 1st, with financial support for yeshivas gradually phased out.

Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu had previously requested a 30-day extension from the Supreme Court to facilitate the advancement of Draft Law legislation.
