It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Mrs. Lily Safra a”h. She passed away on Shabbos in Geneva at the age of 87. Kevurah is scheduled to take place on Monday in Geneva.
Mrs. Safra was the widow of renowned baal tzedakah Mr. Edmond Safra, her fourth husband, who passed away in Monaco in 1999.
Mrs. Safra became strongly involved in philanthropy when she married Mr. Safra, and this continues through their Foundation.
Mrs. Safra was born Lily Watkins on December 30, 1934 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She was the daughter of Wolf White Watkins, a Czechoslovak railway engineer who moved to South America during the electrification of Brazilian railroads, and Annita Noudelman de Castro. She grew up in Rio de Janeiro, and then moved with her family to Montevideo, Uruguay.
In 1976, she married Mr. Safra.
