New York Approves New Private School Regulations As Yeshivos Face Mounting Scrutiny

NY State education policymakers have approved new regulations requiring New York’s private schools give students a robust education, as allegations mount that some Chassidic yeshivas did not teach basic math, history, and English, Gothamist reports. The Board of Regents, which sets policy for the state Department of Education, unanimously voted in favor of the rules today.

The new framework for what qualifies as an education “substantially equivalent” to one offered in public schools follows a New York Times investigation into Chassidic yeshivos in Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley. The paper reported Sunday that out of roughly 1,000 boys at one Chassidic yeshiva in Williamsburg, virtually none passed any state math or reading tests in 2019. The state education department drafted the new rules in response to allegations, first raised in 2015, that more than two-dozen city yeshivas did not meet the threshold.

Gothamist reports that the new regulations now require teachers to demonstrate competence in the subjects they’re teaching and update requirements for instructional time in core subjects like math and social studies. Some 1,800 nonpublic schools in New York state will be affected by the new guidelines, which go into effect on Sept. 28. Schools have until June 2025 to comply.

  1. For now we got away easily. But I wonder what will we be crying about after Dec 2023 when Chassidish schools do absolutely nothing to change.
Who fault is it going be?

    • Hope the schools will not change their education. Do some research into what they’re teaching public school children, Hashem yerachem.

  2. I’m just curious. If NYS offered the Yeshivos a “compromise” that we’ll leave you alone if you don’t take a dime from the State anymore, would they accept the deal?

I’m not saying that it’s wrong for Yeshivos to take money from the Govt, since the parents pay plenty in taxes for education (though, as has been shown over and over, it certainly is not wise to do so). I’m just saying that I wonder how sincere this disagreement really is. If they would take the deal, then I would have to believe it is truly sincere and l’shem shomayim.

    • Education dollars (inlcuding bus service!) are for schools that teach secular studies. That is their definition of a “school”.
You can teach Kodesh all day and night. It is not a secular school for which secular dollars are given.

NO ONE is forcing the Yeshivos to do anything. The state is just saying “no secular studies, no gelt”.

This is all about the $$$

  3. why ever would we want our system of education to be ‘substantially’ similar to public school? they have even changed the very history of this country to agree with their distorted view of what’s ‘true’. they have changed names, torn down statues, are even trying to change the category of persons who are alive today. our children learn volume to determine if a particular cup is large enough for kiddush. they learn how to calculate distance to determine ‘t’chum shabbos’, measurement to know if a fence is tall enough, astronomy to calculate the time for kiddush levanah. yes, there are things we could do to improve the curriculum in our schools, but we dont owe anyone, including our students, an apology

    • This is most naive.
If you take a biy and teach him no secular studies from age 9 and up, he will be illiterate and not capable of basic mathematics. Stop with the apologetics. Either you hold of the system and hold b’shita that this is good for klal yisral or not.
