New Jersey’s longtime state Senate president, Democrat Steve Sweeney, lost reelection, falling to a Republican newcomer whose campaign cost just $5,000 to Sweeney’s $1 million.

Edward Durr, a furniture company truck driver and first-time candidate, defeated Sweeney in New Jersey’s 3rd Legislative District, according to results tallied Thursday.

Durr told Newsmax’s “Rob Schmitt Tonight” on Wednesday his campaign cost around $5,000, while Sweeney’s cost around $1 million.

His GOP primary campaign cost just $153, NJ.com reported.

New Jersey Election Commission documents show Durr spent just $153.31 as of Oct. 27 and $2,313.70 reported as of Nov. 3.

Sweeney’s defeat was unexpected and threw his party’s legislative leadership contest into limbo Wednesday, when he postponed a meeting set for Thursday. Sweeney had been expected to return as Senate president, but who will take over and what margin Democrats will have in the state Legislature is unclear.
