Roughly 16 months after tolls on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway went up in 2020, drivers who use the state’s two largest toll roads are facing another 3% toll hike on Jan. 1, NJ.com reports.

Included in the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s $2.289 billion 2022 budget is one sentence that might make drivers cringe — “annual toll rate indexing at 3% effective January 1, 2022,″ which in laypersons language means tolls are going up New Year’s Day.

“The purpose of the 3% indexing is to provide a stable funding source for capital needs. That’s where the additional revenue will be going,” said Tom Feeney, a Turnpike Authority spokesman. “It will support the unprecedented amount of work being done under the Authority’s long-term capital program.”

Tolls last increased on Sept. 13, 2020, by 36% on the Turnpike, 27% on the Parkway and 37% on the Atlantic City Expressway, to fund a 10-year, $24 billion capital plan on the Parkway and Turnpike and a similar $500 million plan for the Expressway.
