New York City council members have proposed a new bill that would mandate the use of less noisy sirens for emergency vehicles operating within the city.

The bill, reintroduced by Councilwomen Carlina Rivera and Gale Brewer, aims to limit the sirens’ volume to 90 decibels, which is 30 decibels lower than the current level. In addition, the emergency vehicles would be required to emit an alternating, high-low frequency sound similar to what is used in Europe, as reported by the New York Post.

During a recent hearing, Councilwoman Rivera stated, “We understand that New York is a bustling city, but that doesn’t mean we have to endure ear-splitting siren noise that disrupts daily life and the enjoyment of our neighborhoods, while still allowing these vehicles to navigate and reach people in a timely manner.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a siren volume of 90 decibels is slightly louder than the noise generated by a leaf blower or a gas-powered lawn mower but slightly quieter than a motorcycle’s noise.

However, not all council members agree that such a change is necessary for the city. Councilwoman Joann Ariola argues that reducing the siren volume would “defeat their purpose” and believes that louder sirens can provide emergency personnel with valuable extra seconds to reach and rescue victims.

Supporters of the proposed legislation contend that quieter sirens would contribute to a decrease in hypertension, which refers to higher than normal blood pressure, according to the CDC. Additionally, a 2016 study conducted by the University of Michigan School of Public Health suggests that quieter sirens would also help reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease.

  1. studies also show that stopping to stuff oyur face with cheeseburgers and fries will also help in reducing hypertension alot more than a siren.
am I alone here, or is that Euro siren the most annoying noise around??

  2. NYC Bill Would Require Emergency Vehicles To Use Quieter Sirens
“These emergency vehicle sirens are so loud, I recently had to go to the emergency room after one of those sirens pierced my ear drums,” one NY City Council member told reporters on Tuesday. “The ambulance paramedics came to my home and did a good job of treating the pain in my ear, but unfortunately my ear drums sustained additional damage as soon as the paramedics carried me into the ambulance and turned on their sirens.”

  3. Its racist to use these “ear splitting” sirens! Its the biggest cause for climate change! If you disagree you are a conspiracy theorist and your opinion doesn’t count. You are dismissing science. If you call me stupid, you are victimizing me. Call me an idiot and I’ll tell inform you that unless you are an expert in idiocy, your opinion doesn’t count!

  4. By the way, the sirens are not even that loud I can’t hear from far plus who is going to listen especially the Jews because we care about saving lives and the louder the sirens are the faster we can save a person’s life. also, chances are that it won’t pass

    Good idea.

The government should work next on banning or quieting the leaf blowers and other noisy things.
