New York City Mayor Eric Adams achieved a minor triumph in his battle against regulations concerning the right to shelter, gaining increased adaptability as his administration grapples with the task of accommodating thousands of individuals from the Texas border who have inundated the city’s shelter network.

A temporary agreement was unveiled by the city in collaboration with the Legal Aid Society, which stipulates that stays in city shelters for single adults will be capped at 30 days for the duration of the migrant crisis—a notable departure from the city’s longstanding policy, which previously ensured indefinite accommodation for all homeless individuals in New York City.

Last year, the mayor’s office petitioned the court to temporarily halt the distinctive right-to-shelter policy as the influx of migrants into the city reached unprecedented levels. While the obligation remains intact, the settlement will provide the city with greater leeway in managing the substantial population of over 64,000 migrants currently under its care.
