Less than a year after the Champlain Towers South collapsed in Surfside, the town’s voters have ousted their mayor. Business owner Shlomo Danziger – an Orthodox Jew – was elected Tuesday to replace Mayor Charles Burkett, who came in third place in the election.
Danziger beat Burkett and Vice Mayor Tina Paul.
There is no runoff needed, the city clerk says.
Danziger relocated to Surfside from Crown Heights about ten years ago.
Commissioner Eliana Salzhauer was also defeated, as three new commissioners were elected with Commissioner Nelly Velasquez.
