Thousands of chassidim gathered this week in the Tosh community of Quebec, Canada, to mark the yahrtzeit of the Tosher Rebbe, with visitors arriving from around the world to participate in the commemorations at the beis medrash and the Rebbe’s kever.
As the streets overflowed with people making their way through the community, panic suddenly broke out when a non-Jewish driver sped through the center of the neighborhood and slammed into several parked vehicles with tremendous force.
Against the backdrop of the sharp rise in antisemitic incidents across Canada in recent months, many chassidim and guests initially feared they were witnessing a deliberate vehicle-ramming attack targeting the large crowds. People scattered in every direction, rushing to find safety as confusion and fear spread through the area.
After several anxious minutes, police and emergency personnel arrived and determined that the incident was not a terrorist attack. Authorities concluded that the driver had simply lost control of the vehicle, causing the crash.
Witnesses described the outcome as nothing short of miraculous. At the time of the collision, the streets were crowded with people walking to the community’s central beis medrash and to the Tosher Rebbe’s kever. Despite the violent impact and the widespread panic, no one was physically injured, and the incident resulted only in damage to parked vehicles.
