It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports of the passing of R’ Haim Ashkenazi zt”l.
R’ Ashkenazi was a victim of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that wreaked havoc in Mexico City last Tuesday, destroying dozens of buildings and killing more than 300 people.
He was last seen alive in his office building, which collapsed in the quake. His disappearance spurred many to recite tehillim on his behalf and his name was made known through many social media outlets.
ZAKA volunteers in Mexico found the body at the site of the office building just after Yom Tov started.
R’ Ashkenazi served as the rabbi of the Kehillat Magen David synagogue and was the father-in-law of the current Mexican Chief Rabbi, Rav Shlomo Tawil.
