It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski z”l.

Rabbi Twerski was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and enrolled in the Hebrew Theological College of Chicago (now located in Skokie, Illinois) and received semicha in 1951. In 1953 he enrolled at Milwaukee’s Marquette University, and subsequently graduated from its medical school in 1960, after which he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He was co-rov of Congregation Beth Jehudah with his father until 1959. During this time, he composed the famous tune for “Hoshea es Amecha,” which became popular across the world.

  1. 18 Shevat 5781 will go down as one of the darkest days of the year for Klal Yisroel. No, I do not mean because of the sea of black that crowded the areas surrounding Yeshivas Brisk and Yeshivas Kaminentz. THE DAY ITSELF TURNED BLACK. THE DAY ITSELF!
I am currently watching the levaya of Maran Hagaon Harav Yitzchok Scheiner ZTVK”L, I was just informed of the petira of Rav Avraham J. Twerski ZT”L, I just watched a replay of the levaya of Maran Hagaon Harav Dovid Soloveitchik ZTVK”L, which took place earlier today. What else is there to say?! How much more than the above sentence does one need to make a day turn black?! YUD CHES SHEVAT HAS BECOME A BLACK DAY! OY NA LANU KI CHATANU! TORAH TORAH CHAGREI SEK!

  2. Dont forget that the amazing Rabbi Twersky also carried on a Torah correspondence with no less a luminary than the Steipler Gaon zt’l. Their letters to each other on a host of Torah sugyos was published as a sefer “L’Yaakov u’lyisroel”.

  3. What a tremendous asset he was to the Jewish people, and what a kiddush Hashem he made in his interactions with non-Jews. Men of this ilk are mighty scarce: Talmid Chacham, Rabbi, thinker psychiatrist, counselor, speaker, prolific writer (and a great one too!), visionary, trailblazer, etc. Look how much one person with a healthy self-image can accomplish!

The world has lost 3 great godolim in such a short amount of time.
Thank you R Twerski for all that you did for us.
May your memory be ureim veNaseim ad olam.
