Following his public opposition to the Draft Law during Purim, Rav Moshe Tzadka, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Porat Yosef in Yerushalayim, voiced a firm stance against charedi men’s enlistment in the IDF, even if they aren’t fully dedicated to Torah study throughout the day.
“We must firmly believe that those devoted to Torah study are the true guardians of our soldiers, the ones shielding them, tending to their wounds, and safeguarding them,” expressed Rav Tzadka.
He emphasized that even those young men who don’t immerse themselves entirely in Torah learning, expressing a level of weakness in their studies, should not be encouraged to enlist. “It is forbidden, and may we never consider sending them to the IDF. They combine prayer and study, making them ill-suited for the army environment, rife with temptations they may struggle to resist. Sending them would mean losing a significant defensive asset for the people of Israel.
“The loss of strength for safeguarding our soldiers is considerable. Their protection is intricately tied to the yeshiva students, even the less proficient ones, through their commitment to Torah and avoidance of wrongdoing. Upholding Torah observance in the military setting is exceedingly challenging,” he remarked.
Rav Tzadka maintained that in the interest of preserving and ensuring the safety of the soldiers, “no yeshiva student should be deployed there.”

Boys who come from weak backgrounds and only are socially in yeshiva who want join will completely assimilate into their secular society environment.
However if a boy is committed to real Torah values but only learns here and there from a Schotenstein Gemara or the like why shouldn’t he join a frum unit ?
