It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Shalom Povarsky zt”l, rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Kol Torah in the Bayit Vegan neighborhood of Yerushalayim. He was 85 years old.

Rav Povarsky had been admitted to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Yerushalayim after contracting the coronavirus and suffering from shortness of breath.

Rav Povarsky was born in Baranovitch, Belarus, on the 24th of Nissan in 1935, the youngest son of his father, Rav Yehoshua Dovid Povarsky, the late rosh yeshiva of Ponovezh Yeshiva, and his mother, Rebbetzin Chaya Feigel, daughter of Rav Dovid Dov Kreiser zt”l, rosh yeshiva at the Kletzk Yeshiva.

Rav Shalom arrived in Eretz Yisroel with his parents when he was four years old and later studied at the Ponovezh Yeshiva, where he was recognized as an outstanding masmid and lamdan.

When he reached marriageable age, he married his rebbetzin, a daughter of Rav Simcha Pines.

For many years, Rav Shalom served as a maggid shiur at Yeshiva Be’er Yaakov together with the late rosh yeshiva Rav Moshe Shmuel Shapiro and the mashgiach Rav Shlomo Wolbe. During that time, Rav Shalom resided in Be’er Yaakov. In 1982, he became a rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Kol Torah in Bayit Vegan, where he continued to be marbitz Torah, teaching generations of talmidim, who were inspired by his ahavas haTorah and his love of the bnei Torah.

Rav Shalom’s brother is Rav Baruch Dov Povarsky, rosh yeshiva at the Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak.

Rav Shalom’s levayah was held tonight at Yeshiva Kol Torah. Kevurah took place at the Ponovezher Bais Hachaim in Bnei Brak.

Yehi zichro boruch.
