The noted rov Rav Shlomo Machpoud, who is an expert mohel, was en route to a bris last week when, due to a traffic backup, he realized that he, and the baby with its parents, wouldn’t make it to the bris location before shkiah, sunset, in time for the bris to be performed on the eighth day.

Rav Machpoud and the parents – who had, in the meantime, been pulled over by police for an illegal detour – managed to meet up next to Ben Gurion Airport and, with just minutes before shkiah, Rav Machpoud performed the bris, on the eighth day, in the back seat of the car, the taxi driver serving as the impromptu sandek.

Thus, on the side of an Israeli highway, a baby boy was welcomed into the covenant of Avrohom Avinu, a member of the most special nation on earth.

  1. Rav Machpoud performed the bris, on the eighth day, in the back seat of the car.
When asked to express his feelings about the impromptu bris, the baby – who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity because he had yet to be told what name his father had given him – told reporters: “I learned a long time ago – about 8 long days ago, when I first arrived on these shores – never to take a back seat to anyone. But, in this instance, because of the time constraint and the need to fulfill the mitzvah correctly, and because Rav Machpoud was kind enough to take a back seat in order to perform the mitzvah correctly, I decided, if the Rav can take a back seat, I certainly can…, just this one time.”
When informed that the Rav did not actually take a back seat, but stood outside the car while performing the bris, the baby said: “All the more credit to him! But I’m just a baby, and I don’t think I could have withstood the cold elements outside. Tell the Rav I’m sorry about that one. My apologies to the Rav.”
