It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Yosef Lieberman zt”l, rosh kollel of Kollel Shomrei Hachomos and the rov of the Sadigura Bais Medrash in Yerushalayim, on Shabbos morning. He was 95.

Rav Lieberman, a renowned gaon and talmid chochom, was the author of Sefer Mishnas Yosef.

Rav Lieberman was born in Pressburg, Slovakia, a son of Rav Tuvia Lieberman, who was a descendant of the Chasam Sofer, and Rechel Lieberman, a daughter of Rav Yekusiel Freidiger, a descendant of Rav Yaakov Yisrael Twerski of Cherkas.

As a youngster, he became close to the rov of the city, Rav Akiva Sofer, the Daas Sofer, a relationship that continued even when they immigrated to Eretz Yisrael.

He married his wife, Malka, a daughter of Rav Yechiel Chaim Labin, the rebbe of Makova, who was a brother-in-law of Rav Aharon of Belz.

He became close to the Tchebiner Rov, Rav Dov Berish Weidenfeld.

Rav Lieberman was appointed to serve as the rosh kollel of Kollel SHomreo Hachomos and, when he moved to the Neveh Zvi neighborhood in Yerushalayim, as the rov of the Sadigura Bais Medrash.

Rav Lieberman was a noted posek and a senior editor and contributor to the ArtScroll Talmud.

In recent years, he lived in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Rabbi and Mrs. Menachem Mendel Fuchs in the Ramot neighborhood of Yerushalayim.

Rav Lieberman leaves behind an outstanding family, including his sons: Rav Yehoshua Lieberman, Rosh Beis Midrash L’Dayanus Heichal Hamishpat and Rosh Kollel Iyun Shevet Halevi, Rav Yekusial Leiberman, one of the rabbonim of the Sadigura Bais Medrash in Yerushalayim, Mrs. Weiss, wife of Rav Chaim Weiss, rov in Beitar, Mrs. Shmerler, wife of Rav Chaim Shmerler, Mrs. Fuchs, wife of Rav Menachem Mendel Fuchs, rv of Kehillas Shomrei Hachomos in Ramot.

The levayah was held tonight at the Sadigura Bais Medrash on Rechov Shmuel Hanovi in Yerushalayim, passing Kollel Shomrei Hachomos in Botei Ungarin, followed by kevurah on Har Hamenuchos near the tziyun of Rav Aharon of Belz.
