According to a report in Channel 13 on Thursday, Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu has been saying in recent weeks that he does not intend to keep on Israeli Ambassador Mike Herzog to the US for another year. The report suggests serious differences of opinion have developed between Bibi’s office and Ambassador Herzog.

The Channel 13 report says Herzog’s tenure is expected to expire in four months.

Ambassador Michael Herzog is considered by many to be a national security expert and veteran peace negotiator, and he also is Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s brother.

The report also states that sources close to Bibi have suggested that the current Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan is a possible candidate to become the next Ambassador to the US.

Erdan was appointed by Netanyahu to serve as Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations at the end of his tenure in domestic politics following the 2020 Knesset elections. Erdan was initially sworn in as the Regional Cooperation Minister in Israel’s 35th Government on May 17, 2020, but he was quickly transitioned to a dual role as both Ambassador to the UN and Ambassador to the US. The last time Israel’s Ambassador to the UN was also the Ambassador to the US was in the 1950’s with Abba Eben. Erdan’s was replaced as Abmassador to the US by Herzog on November 15, 2021.
