A State Department official resigned Wednesday in protest of the United States’ continuing support for Israel’s brutal bombardment of the Gaza Strip, according to a report from NBC News.
“I have a young daughter,” Annelle Sheline, a U.S. State Department official who focused on human rights issues in the Middle East, told the network. “Someday reading about this in school, she might ask, what did I do? I want to be able to tell her that I tried to do as much as I could.”
The resignation likely led, at least in part, to Israeli leaders agreeing to reschedule talks with the Biden Administration they had previously called off after the U.S. declined to veto a United Nations resolution on Monday which demanded an immediate ceasefire in the besieged enclave. The resumption of talks comes amid a growing rift between Tel Aviv and Washington, with the latter, including Joe Biden, pushing Israel to pause its ground assault in Gaza because of the humanitarian crisis it has caused.
