Syria’s allies in the Gulf are reportedly working bring Damascus back into the Arab League, eight years after the country was kicked out for its brutal response to peaceful demonstrations.
Sources told The Guardian that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad – who will join Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman and Egypt’s Abdel Fatah al-Sisi – may soon return to his seat as one of several controversial autocrats leading the Arab world.
Syria, which has been diplomatically isolated – apart from support received from Iran, Turkey, and Russia – since Assad began his brutal assault on rebel groups and civilians, is slowly being welcomed back into the arena of pan-Arab relations.
