Israeli officials have confirmed that “important” talks are underway with Hamas to return the remains of two IDF soldiers along with a pair of captives back home, Channel 12 reported on Wednesday.
Ismail Haniyeh, who heads the Gaza-based terrorist group but is based in Doha, Qatar, said Friday that he was optimistic about the possibility of achieving a prisoner swap with Israel and that the group was ready for indirect negotiations.
The two living Israeli captives are Avraham “Avera” Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who are believed to have voluntarily entered Gaza in 2014-2015, as well as the remains of two Israeli soldiers, St.-Sgt. Oron Shaul and Lt. Hadar Goldin, killed in action during Operation “Protective Edge” in 2014.
