A Special candle-lighting ceremony took place at the headquarters of United Hatzalah on Monday evening, the second night of Chanukah. Nevo Siloni an 8-year-old boy was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident 7 months ago in Hadera. While he was riding a scooter a bus had struck him and had almost completely severed his leg. His sister, just a few years older, witnessed the accident and immediately called her father in a panic. Her father called emergency services. United Hatzalah volunteer EMT Sharon Shmuel who received the emergency alert from United Hatzalah’s dispatch center, arrived at the scene in less than two minutes and applied a tourniquet to Nevo’s leg that stopped the arterial blood flow. Had this simple procedure not been done when it was, Nevo would have bled to death in mere minutes.

On Monday, after numerous operations and months of rehabilitation, Nevo walked into United Hatzalah’s headquarters without any impediment whatsoever. He came with his family and was joined by Sharon in a joyful reunion. They came, during the holiday of Chanukah, to celebrate Nevo’s full recovery and say thank you to the organization whose volunteer saved Nevo’s life. Nevo, his father Itai, and Sharon lit the candles of the Menorah together for the staff and other volunteers present at the headquarters and Nevo’s Mother and Sister who were also in attendance.

Itai shared his feelings at the joyous ceremony. “Sharon’s arrival and saving of our son was nothing short of a miracle. We are all very thankful that he arrived when he did and we are happy to be here to celebrate Nevo’s full recovery with Sharon on this holiday of miracles”

Sharon Shmuel also spoke at the reunion and said: “7 months ago, I received a call regarding a very serious accident that had taken place behind the central bus station of Hadera on Rambam Street. I was one street over and arrived in about 60 seconds. I saw Nevo lying on the street with a very severe leg wound that was almost a complete amputation. The CAT tourniquet that United Hatzalah gives out to its volunteers, that little piece of plastic, is what saved this boy’s life. After his surgeries and lengthy recovery period, it is a special joy to see Nevo happy and smiling and able to walk without any sign of injury. For me, lighting the Menorah with Nevo today is the highlight of my Chanukah.”
