RMS Titanic Inc. Probing If ‘Cavalier’ Stockton Rush Misled Them To Get PH Nargeolet Aboard Doomed Sub

The Titanic foundation, led by Paul-Henri Nargeolet, is investigating claims made by Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate, regarding the safety of his vessel before its ill-fated dive on June 18, according to sources familiar with the matter.

RMS Titanic Inc. President Jessica Sanders described Rush as a “reckless” individual and is now reviewing whether the organization should have allowed Nargeolet to board the vessel. Rush had assured potential passengers that the submersible was “safer than flying in a helicopter or even scuba diving” and even crossing the street.

In light of the tragedy, the Titanic foundation is scrutinizing records and questioning the veracity of Rush’s statements. Sanders stated, “We now have doubts about the information [OceanGate] provided that influenced our decision to allow PH on board. We are internally reevaluating because there were representations made not only to us but also to the court, which we need to verify in light of the emerging stories that raise doubts.”

Rush openly identified himself as a maverick who employed unconventional methods and materials in constructing his submersible. He admitted that he did not seek classification or certification for safety, as it involved a lengthy process spanning several years. Rush believed that involving external entities in his work, including the first-of-its-kind carbon fiber hull that imploded and caused the death of all five individuals on board, would hinder rapid innovation.

In contrast, Nargeolet and RMS Titanic Inc., where he served as director of underwater research, followed a different approach and took measures to ensure compliance with various regulations when permitting Nargeolet to join the June 18 expedition. Sanders clarified that Nargeolet participated strictly as a “guest of OceanGate” rather than for research purposes, in accordance with reporting requirements to a federal judge.

Sanders recounted the initial conversation with Nargeolet, stating, “He approached us initially and said, ‘OceanGate is conducting these expeditions… is there a conflict?'” After careful consideration, they approved the trip.

Nargeolet, who had visited the Titanic wreck around 35 times and had a close relationship with Rush, boarded the submersible along with Sulaiman Dawood, 19, his father Shahzada, 48, and British billionaire explorer Hamish Harding, 58. Tragically, all individuals were lost at the depths of the ocean.

The US Coast Guard revealed that the submersible, named Titan, experienced a “catastrophic implosion” and lost communication with the outside world while attempting to explore the Titanic wreck at a depth of 12,500 feet in the Atlantic, 350 nautical miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The vessel’s communication was severed approximately one hour and 45 minutes into the mission when it was estimated to be at a depth of 10,000 feet. After days of frantic searching, multiple seabed debris fields were spotted, leading to the devastating conclusion that the vessel had imploded. Debris was found approximately 1,600 feet away from the Titanic wreck site.

Following the sub’s disappearance, reports emerged about Rush’s contentious history, including a 2018 lawsuit that raised concerns about “quality control and safety” issues related to the unique vessel. Former director of marine operations at OceanGate, David Lochridge, claimed in the lawsuit that he was wrongfully terminated after raising concerns about the lack of non-destructive testing performed on the Titan’s hull. Additionally, OceanGate consultant Rob McCallum warned Rush in 2018 that he was potentially endangering himself and his clients. The Marine Technology Society also sent a letter to Rush, emphasizing the importance of third-party testing for prototypes before exploring such depths to ensure passenger safety. However, Rush allegedly refused to comply with these recommendations.

The Titanic, previously deemed “unsinkable,” tragically sank in 1912, resulting in the loss of over 1,500 passengers after colliding with an iceberg. Nargeolet, affectionately known as “Mr. Titanic” and a former French navy commander, made significant contributions to the exploration of the wreck. Sanders described him as “a fearless individual with extensive experience” and urged those who hadn’t met him personally to seek out accounts from those who had.
