One of the first Russian Jews to make it big in Silicon Valley with help from the Kremlin, Yuri Milner, has pledged $100 million to help Ukrainian refugees fleeing their homeland.

The fact that Milner has avoided the sanctions imposed by the West in response to Russia’s aggression towards its neighbors sets him apart from other billionaires with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Milner, a dual Russian-Israeli citizen who resides in California, is best known for founding the Breakthrough Prize to acknowledge and encourage scientific excellence. He has made large contributions to many Israeli organizations. The emergency response service Magen David Adom, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, and the Peres Center for Peace are all recipients of Milner funds in Israel. Breakthrough Prize Foundation founder Yuri Milner and private companies, including Airbnb and Flexport, have formed a new Ukrainian relief effort called Tech for Refugees to help those fleeing the conflict in the country.
