A Saudi cleric has sparked outrage by declaring that baby girls must wear the burka. Sheikh Abdullah Daoud, who said all female newborns should wear the veil, insisted the burkas would help to protect the infants against the threat of abuse.
His comments were made in an interview with an Islamic television station that has surfaced online.
In the interview broadcast on al-Majd TV last year, Sheikh Daoud cited instances of babies being abused in Saudi Arabia, and quoted unnamed medical and security sources, a report on Al Arabiya News said.
After the footage suddenly spread across the internet this week, commentators called for the cleric to be held accountable for his fatwa, which they said was damaging to Islam.
Islamic law holds that women should wear the veil after they reach maturity.
Sheikh Mohammed al-Jzlana, a former judge at the Saudi Board of Grievances, told the news channel that Sheikh Daoud’s remarks had made the faith look bad.
He urged people to ignore unofficial religious edicts, which he said were administered under special regulations set by Saudi authorities, which also appoints those entitled to issue them.
The former judge said covering baby girls with burkas was ‘an injustice’ to children.

At least it sparked outrage. I know societies that wont allow pictures of girls (even children) in their publications and nobody seems to be bothered

If a burka is good enough for a 7 y/o jewish girl, why not?
Wearing burkas is bad for their faith, but suicide bombings are not bad for their reputation?

You may think it’s irrelevant, but it isn’t. Makkah and Medinah have been under the control of the Saudis, which most of the religious islamic world perceives as corrupt. Homosexuality and homosexual rape are quite common. Articles like this have to be understood in a context of leadership, both between Shia and Sunni and within Sunni Islam, which many would like to wrestle from the Wahabites. Their heirs’ law does not help, because the brothers and half-brothers of the king are next in line, and only after that is the next generation in the succession line. With many brothers and half-brothers who are elder and with physical ailments, with a new generation of corrupt, and already old, successors, with a large number of descendants who are basically burning money like crazy in Western cities (compare with Ahmadinejad who is frugal and honest and who even sent the presidential residence luxuries to a museum), the Wahabiyya is going through a difficult time. I will only say two words: Iran and New-Egypt.

It is uncomfortable and disrespectful to all frum women that we read a story about heilige Rebbitzens from our past and not see her photo. How would you men like to be told your faces are pritzus?
