schumerNY – Senator Charles Schumer is leading the charge to crack down on telemarketers and robo-callers.

Schumer’s proposed legislation would make it a felony to violate the Federal Do Not Call List.

“When we have the chance to sit down at the end of the day and have a conversation and the phone keeps rining with unsolicited calls, nothing is more annoying,” said Schumer (D-NY).

He would increase the penalty for calling a registered number to $20,000 per call. Repeat offenders could face up to ten years in prison.

The current penalties are too lenient, Schumer said. Many companies are willing to pay current penalties to reach thousands of homes.

According to Schumer, the Federal Trade Commission received over 200,000 complaints in April about telemarketers and robo-callers. That’s four times as many as two years ago.

There are more than 200 million phone numbers on the National No Call List.
