Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) expressed strong disapproval of the recent US government appropriations bill, which received approval in the early hours of Saturday, citing concerns over its provisions regarding US assistance to UNRWA and military aid to Israel.
The bill was ratified by the Senate with a 74-24 majority vote after extensive negotiations, averting a potential government shutdown. President Joe Biden proceeded to sign the bills into law on Saturday afternoon.
“I voted NO on the appropriations bill that the Senate passed last night. While hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children face starvation in Gaza, this bill actually prohibits funding to UNRWA, the key United Nations aid agency delivering life-saving humanitarian support. This will only intensify the already horrific situation in Gaza,” remarked Sanders in a statement following the vote.
Sanders further criticized the bill for allocating an additional $3.3 billion in military aid to support the Netanyahu government’s policies, denouncing it as contributing to what he perceives as a “barbaric war.” He adamantly stated, “The Netanyahu government should not receive another penny from US taxpayers.”
Advocating for a reevaluation of US aid to Israel, Sanders has consistently called for conditions to be placed on such assistance. He has previously condemned the Israeli government, characterizing it as “racist.”
In a recent plea to Congress, Sanders urged the rejection of the proposed $10.1 billion in unconditional military aid destined for Israel, asserting that such funds would only fuel what he deems as Israel’s “brutal war against the Palestinian people.”
Despite Sanders’ growing criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, he remains hesitant to endorse a permanent ceasefire, arguing that doing so could potentially invite further attacks from Hamas.
